A Brief History of CALL
In the early aughts, high-rise associations throughout Florida were facing the prospect of retrofitting their buildings with sprinkler systems both inside and outside the residential units. The costs, labor, practical hurdles, and aesthetic concerns involved with a state-mandated program of that magnitude created the momentum for a grassroots advocacy initiative like the Community Association Leadership Lobby (CALL) to take root.
CALL was a natural outgrowth of Becker’s already well-established reputation as a leader in the community association industry. CALL quickly mobilized and for more than a decade has educated public policy makers, community association leaders, and residents on the hot button sprinkler issue.
With the heady success of having achieved legislative opt-out rights and more time for communities to install these costly systems, CALL began tackling additional issues that affect all types of communities. These have included delinquent owners continuing to use common amenities during the Great Recession, improving legislative proposals designed to increase transparency in association operations, and seeking more state resources for communities dealing with abandoned properties. When draconian anti-board legislation was being considered in 2005 and 2006, CALL members flew up to Tallahassee and presented a more balanced picture to the committees hearing these bills which resulted in helpful rather than harmful changes.
Today, CALL’s footprint in the legislative arena in Florida has been firmly established. CALL works with legislators, umbrella groups, educators, and advocates throughout the Sunshine State to ensure that positive legislation continues to promote the quality association lifestyle that so many Floridians enjoy. Our CALL Team is prepared to meet the continuing challenges for community associations for decades to come. Please take a moment to meet each of them. Click here to view the CALL team.
